Super-resolution mapping of wetland inundation from remote sensing

چکیده
Mapping the spatio-temporal characteristics of wetland 19 inundation has important significance to the study of wetland environment and 20 associated flora and fauna. High temporal remote sensing imagery is widely 21 used for this purpose with the limitations of relatively low spatial resolutions. In 22 this study, a novel method based on integration of back-propagation neural 23 network (BP) and genetic algorithm (GA), so-called IBPGA, is proposed for 24 super-resolution mapping of wetland inundation (SMWI) from multispectral 25 remote sensing imagery. The IBPGA-SMWI algorithm is developed, including 26 the fitness function and integration search strategy. IBPGA-SMWI was 27 evaluated using Landsat TM/ETM+ imagery from the Poyanghu wetland in 28 China and the Macquarie Marshes in Australia. Compared with traditional 29 SMWI methods, IBPGA-SMWI consistently achieved more accurate super30 resolution mapping results in terms of visual and quantitative evaluations. In 31 comparison with GA-SMWI, IBPGA-SMWI not only improved the accuracy of 32 1 SMWI, but also accelerated the convergence speed of the algorithm. The 33 sensitivity analysis of IBPGA-SMWI in relation to standard crossover rate, BP 34 crossover rate and mutation rate was also carried out to discuss the algorithm 35 performance. It is hoped that the results of this study will enhance the 36 application of median-low resolution remote sensing imagery in wetland 37 inundation mapping and monitoring, and ultimately support the studies of 38 wetland environment. 39

Subpixel Inundation Mapping Using Landsat-8 OLI and UAV Data for a Wetland Region on the Zoige Plateau, China
Wetland inundation is crucial to the survival and prosperity of fauna and flora communities in wetland ecosystems. Even small changes in surface inundation may result in a substantial impact on the wetland ecosystem characteristics and function. This study presented a novel method for wetland inundation mapping at a subpixel scale in a typical wetland region on the Zoige Plateau, northeast Tibe...
متن کاملAutomated Quantification of Surface Water Inundation in Wetlands Using Optical Satellite Imagery
We present a fully automated and scalable algorithm for quantifying surface water inundation in wetlands. Requiring no external training data, our algorithm estimates sub-pixel water fraction (SWF) over large areas and long time periods using Landsat data. We tested our SWF algorithm over three wetland sites across North America, including the Prairie Pothole Region, the Delmarva Peninsula and ...
متن کاملDevelopment and Evaluation of a Multi-Year Fractional Surface Water Data Set Derived from Active/Passive Microwave Remote Sensing Data
The sensitivity of Earth’s wetlands to observed shifts in global precipitation and temperature patterns and their ability to produce large quantities of methane gas are key global change questions. We present a microwave satellite-based approach for mapping fractional surface water (FW) globally at 25-km resolution. The approach employs a land cover-supported, atmospherically-corrected dynamic ...

Wetlands are not only primary producers of atmospheric greenhouse gases but also possess unique features that are favourable for application of satellite microwave remote sensing to monitoring their status and trend. In this study we apply combined passive and active microwave remote sensing data sets from the NASA sensors AMSR-E and QuikSCAT to map surface water dynamics over Northern Eurasia....
متن کاملMonitoring Spatial and Temporal Dynamics of Flood Regimes and Their Relation to Wetland Landscape Patterns in Dongting Lake from MODIS Time-Series Imagery
Dongting Lake, the second largest freshwater lake in China, is well known for its rapid seasonal fluctuations in inundation extents in the middle reach of the Yangtze River, and it is also the lake most affected by the Three Gorges Project. Significant inter-annual and seasonal variations in flood inundations were observed from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) time-series i...
